Fiction: You Must be Invited to Join the Masons

Many people mistakenly believe that Freemasonry is an invitation-only fraternity - this is actually 180º from the truth, which is that a man must ask of his own free will and accord to become a Mason!

One unfortunate side-effect of this misconception is that throughout the years many men who were interested in Freemasonry never joined because they thought they needed a special invitation from a close friend or family member.

Similarly, while Freemasonry is a proud tradition passed from father to son across generations of many families there is no requirement that a man must be related to another Mason in order to join - another misconception sometimes held by men interested in joining.
